Mélanie Laplante
Mélanie has been a self-taught glass artist for almost 20 years.
The name of her line of glass jewelry and home objects, MÉLA, comes from the first syllables of her name: MÉlanie LAplante. But, mela also means to gather, to unite in Sanskrit. A nod to the thermoforming technique, fusion, which she mainly uses to make her creations.
A great traveler, she has traveled the world alone. It was during her stay of several years in Central and South America that she learned the making of ceramics and jewelry, as well as the manipulation of leather from experienced artisans.
Back in Montreal, while researching glazes for her ceramic jewelry, while experimenting with glass powder and mixed mediums, she fell in love with this material.
"For me, glass is a dense material that makes light vibrate. I like to superimpose layers of colored glass, which, transformed by heat, forms a movement whose traces can be seen in each piece. I add my own touch, cold-faceting angles to follow the curves created by the heat. A paradox in itself, to rework heat by cold!
The final result then becomes mirrored or frosted to reflect and diffuse light as only glass can."

My arrival at l'Empreinte as an employee was the start of an unexpected adventure within an exceptional family of artisans. Applying to become a member represented an incredible opportunity to grow my work within this warm community. The camaraderie and mutual support between members are essential pillars, and as a member, I'm proud to contribute to the ongoing development of l'Empreinte.

These beautiful summer rings are entirely handmade in Montreal from multiple layers of glass and multiple high temperature firings to create a soft petal effect.
Each petal is a piece of hand-cut glass. Then it is sandblasted and faceted by hand at cold temperatures to create the final angles. Note that each flower is different in shape and angles but, all similar as you can see in the various photos.
